The Knoxville - Knox County Animal Center works with local, regional, and national rescue groups. A qualification process is used in order to assure that groups are legitimate and have a responsible adoption philosophy.
Documentation Used in Qualification
The following items are to be submitted to the Animal Center:
- A copy of the group's charter as a nonprofit organization, or a letter of affiliation with a national or regional group that is chartered to rescue.
- A copy of the group's adoption guidelines and adoption contract.
- A letter verifying that the group currently has a working relationship with a veterinarian.
- A list of all persons who are authorized to act as agents of the group.
General Rules
- A rescued animal is to be committed to and/or removed from the shelter within 24 hours of notification. If the animal is not removed within that time period, it will be made available to other rescue groups that are able to care for the animal immediately.
- Follow-up care or post-treatment evaluations after the animal enters foster care should be the responsibility of the rescue group through an outside vet. Upon leaving facility, no other services are provided.
- A rescued animal may not be returned to the shelter unless there is a behavioral or medical problem verified by the Animal Center's staff veterinarian.
- If the Animal Center has an available home on its waiting list or a member of the public is interested in adopting the animal, the Animal Center will adopt the animal directly. If no home is available, the animal will be released to rescue.
