H.A.L.T. (Humans and Animals Learning Together) is a non-profit program within which at-risk adolescents teach basic obedience commands to dogs rescued from area shelters.
Wally, Clifford, Amber, Charlie, and Lily sound like a group of friends at school and…they are! They are four legged friends who were all chosen from YWAC to participate in HALT school. Twice a week for a month troubled teens commit to be student trainers for a canine obedience course. They learn the magic of training and interacting with a homeless dog. Each dog is placed in a suitable home after graduation. The students know that, through their efforts, each dog is much more adoptable after the completion of the course.
Teens learn that it takes patience, commitment, kindness, and consistency to teach a dog. By helping a shelter dog, the teens gain confidence and a sense of accomplishment. The following are some of the many comments the teens write about their HALT program experience:
“I can do something good. Helping things is good.”
“I have more patience than what I thought. I can actually teach a dog new things.”
“When I first got my dog she didn’t even listen to her name and now she knows sit, down, off, and stay, sometimes.”
“Please take care and love her”.
All the HALT dogs will be available for adoption through HALT when classes are over October 13. The HALT dogs will be taken to weekend adoption events (see below). If you are interested in meeting a HALT dog, finding out about the adoption events, or becoming a HALT volunteer, please call 865 693-5540 and your request will be given to the appropriate person. HALT information is also on their website: www.vet.utk.edu/halt/

Dogs are part of our families, but our “best friends” can get sick, just like us. Morris Animal Foundation launched the Canine Cancer Campaign to help scientists worldwide prevent, treat and, ultimately, cure cancer in dogs.

The K9 Cancer Walk program raises funds and awareness for the Canine Cancer Campaign, which funds research that will develop prevention strategies, test new treatments, establish tools for cancer researchers and train new scientists specializing in cancer research.

Participating in one of these walks is a great way to memorialize a beloved dog lost to cancer and create a brighter tomorrow for your current companion. By supporting the K9 Cancer Walk program, volunteers and participants help their best friends live longer, healthier lives.

Half of all dogs will be affected by cancer—but together, we can beat this disease.

All K9 Cancer Walks are dog and family friendly.

Movies on Market Square runs September 9 through October 14

(Knoxville, TN) Knox County Public Library’s popular outdoor movie series returns to Market Square for the eighth year of free family fun in front of the silver screen—and this time it’s gone to the dogs! Partnering with PetSafe, this year’s Movies on Market Square is gunning to be the most pet friendly movie series ever.

To pick the line up, thousands of people cast their vote for movies in six categories, with Lady and the Tramp being the only landslide winner, taking the Hollywood Hounds category by 46% out of six options. The other categories held very tight races.

And the winners are:

9/9 – Hook (PG – 1991)

9/16 – How to Train Your Dragon (PG – 2010)

9/23 – Lady and the Tramp (G – 1955)

9/30 – Star Trek (PG-13 – 2009)

10/7 – Footloose (PG – 1984)

10/14 – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (PG – 2009)

All movies are rated PG-13 or less, but parents are encouraged to check out the films to make sure they are right for their family. The series will run for six Friday nights, from September 9 through October 14.

Pre-show activities will feature pet tips and advice, as well as an array of four-legged festivities sure to please even the most sophisticated Fido. The furry fun will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the movies begin at dusk. Of course, all pets must be very well behaved, and all city rules regarding pets must be observed.

NEW THIS YEAR – Fun and furry contests:

The 2011 Book and Dog Lovers Song Contest – Creative folks are invited to write and perform an original song on video that features a love of both books and dogs. Submissions will be accepted at www.knoxlib.org starting Sept 9, and the winning entry will receive a prize pack from PetSafe. The top three finalists will be shown at the final Movies on Market Square.

VIP Movie Prize Pack – Movie goers have a chance to win a VIP Package ever, which includes $50 gift card to a restaurant with a pet-friendly patio, VIP seating for a family of 4 and their dogs, and VIP parking. A winner is chosen each week. Visit facebook for details.

Each year, the Library puts on Movies on Market Square to highlight its vast collection of film and music. Audiovisual items now account for just over half of all circulating items at Lawson McGhee Library. Last year, over 454,000 DVDs, CDs, and audio books were checked out throughout the county.

Movies on Market Square is made possible through the generous support of PetSafe, The Tomato Head, Downtown Knoxville, KUB, Metro Pulse, WBIR, B97.5 and Lunar Cinemas.

Did you know that black dogs are often passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored dogs?

This is commonly known as “Black Dog Syndrome”.

This phenomenon may be due to a number of factors:

Black dogs are often portrayed as aggressive in film and television

Association of the color black to evil or misfortune

Fear stigma against certain breed types/stereotypes

Facial expressions of dark colored dogs are harder to read

Black dogs don’t show well in a shelter setting

Or it could be that black dogs are just too ordinary…

To help bring attention to this problem, and to help our black dogs find new homes; we are celebrating and promoting our “Black Pearls”!
