The 14th Annual Spay Day USA takes place on Tuesday, February 26, 2008; however, events and activities take place throughout the month of February. During Spay Day USA's first 13 years, participants spayed or neutered an estimated 1,387,000 animals!! When you consider that an unspayed cat can give birth to 18 kittens each year and an unspayed dog can give birth to 20 puppies each year, it is clear that Spay Day USA participants have potentially prevented millions of surplus births. Together we can prevent euthanasia by preventing surplus births. To register, get more information, or to download your action kit, please visit Spay Day USA 2009.

Public Lecture: Alternatives to Being the “Alpha”: Better Ways to Interact with Dogs When: Tuesday, March 16, 7:00 pm Where: At University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine
If you have a pet dog or you work with dogs, chances are someone has told you about the importance of keeping a dog under control by making sure you are the “alpha dog” in the “pack.” Recent studies in animal behavior suggest that this model for the human-dog relationship is not useful or appropriate and has resulted in dog training methods that are ineffective, harmful to the human-dog relationship and in some cases, physically abusive. Alternative models and training methods are fun, effective and will enhance the human-dog relationship. This talk will include the history of dominance theory as applied to domestic dogs, dog training demonstrations and a question and answer session. About the speaker: Ellen Mahurin earned her master's in experimental psychology/animal behavior from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2006. For five years (2004-2009) she owned and operated Clever Critters, a pet behavior consulting, pet parent education and pet behavior research business in Knoxville. Ellen is a member of the International Society for Anthrozoology (supporting scientific study of human- animal interactions) and of the Animal Behavior Society through which she is currently working toward qualification as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist. Ellen now lives in Yorktown, VA with her husband and two children.

American Humane's Every Day Is Tag Day When: Sunday, April 4, Where:
The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. Without a voice, and without a tag, he may never find his way home. The American Humane Association leads this nationwide campaign to encourage all pet owners to microchip or tag their companion animals. This annual effort helps give animals a voice to find their way home. According to a study of 1,000 animal shelters, conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, approximately 1 million dogs and 584,000 cats were taken in as strays. Unfortunately for both owners and animals, only 16% of the dogs and 2% of the cats were returned to their owners. These statistics are alarming. By celebrating Every Day is Tag Day, we can help combat these statistics. Every Day is Tag Day unites thousands of individuals, plus professionals in local shelters, veterinary clinics, animal care and control agencies, and other humane agencies, in the common goal of educating pet owners about the benefits of tagging their companion animals. Identification is your pet's ticket home! For more information, please visit Every Day is Tag Day - American Humane.
