Animal Center's Volunteer Training Session
When: Thursday, May 15, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

THIS TRAINING SESSION IS FULL. PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE NEXT ONE, WHICH WILL BE HELD SEPTEMBER 20. This training session is for individuals who have already attended a general volunteer orientation session at the Animal Center. At this training session, volunteers are expected to submit their annual $25 program fee and provide the Volunteer Coordinator with their volunteer schedule. A set schedule for volunteering is required to be sure that each individual donates at least six (6) hours to the animals each month. American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen® Program
When: Thursday, May 22, 6:00 - 7:00 pm
Where: Young-Williams Animal Center, 3201 Division Street, Knoxville, TN 37919
This program, for graduates of the "basic obedience" course, is a means of rewarding dogs who are well-behaved companions at home and in the community. The goals of the Canine Good Citizen program are to teach responsible dog ownership to owners and to provide basic training and good manners to dogs. Graduates will receive an AKC certificate for passing this 10-step CGC test: accept a friendly stranger, sit politely for petting, appearance and grooming, out for a walk, walk through a crowd, sit, down, stay on command, come when called, reaction to another dog, reactions to distractions, and supervised separation. The program consists of a six-week class (to be held 5/22, 5/29, 6/5, 6/12, 6/19, and 6/26), one hour per week. There is a limit of 10 dogs per class. The course fee is $125. This one hour and 15 minute group is for veterinarians, veterinary technicians and assistants, client representatives, animal shelter workers, animal control officers, animal abuse investigators, zoo staff, rescue group workers, and others who spend their time working with animals. The group serves animal-related professionals in the Nine-County Region. There is no fee to attend. Facilitators are Dr. Elizabeth B. Strand, LCSW, Director of Veterinary Social Work, University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and Taylor Slemmer, Humane Educator, Young-Williams Animal Center. Chip & Clip Clinic
When: Saturday, May 31, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Where: Young-Williams Animal Center, 3201 Division Street, Knoxville, TN 37919
Bring your cats and dogs to the Animal Center for our discount microchip and toenail trimming clinic! Microchips are just $20, which includes chip registration. Microchips are the identification tag that never falls off, so we hope you’ll take the time to get this life-saving tool for your pet. The chip and clip team will also provide toenail trims for $8, and donations are always welcome! All dogs must be leashed or crated, and cats must be safely contained, too. You can leave the rest to us! Can't come to the chip and clip clinic? Did you know that the Animal Center always offers discount microchipping? Pet owners are welcome to bring their cats or dogs to the Center Monday through Friday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm for a microchip or toenail trim. So many of the animals that receive care at the Animal Center are clearly someone’s pet. If they had a microchip, owners could be quickly located and the pet could be returned home. Camp Care Junior 2008

Summer 2008 brings year three for the Animal Center's Camp Care! This special camp gives younger animal lovers an opportunity to spend time with the animals they love while doing activities that teach them about responsibility, kindness, and respect for all living things. In Camp Care Junior, campers learn about basic animal care for dogs, cats, and small furry pets through discussion, activities, and play. Camp tuition is $175 per person. Scholarships are available. THIS ORIENTATION IS FULL. PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE NEXT ONE, WHICH WILL BE HELD SEPTEMBER 11. Does your fur run orange? If so, you should Join the PAC (Pals of the Animal Center)! In its new facility, the Animal Center shelters 475 homeless and unwanted animals, and volunteer help is needed every day. PAC members walk and behavior train dogs, socialize cats, work with small mammals, assist in adoptions, help keep the animals clean and comfy, work at special events and fundraisers, and much more! This general orientation is open to anyone interested in learning more about Knox County's non-profit, open-intake animal shelter and the important role it plays in our community. The Animal Center permits volunteers of any age, however, children younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Although we welcome a long-term volunteering commitment, all volunteers are required to donate at least six hours each month for one year and are required to pay a $25 program fee to cover printing and other program costs. American Humane: Bark… Stop, Drop, & Roll™ (BSDR) Canine Encounter Training
When: Thursday, July 17, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

The Bark… Stop, Drop, & Roll™ training is geared towards police and canine encounters and is conducted by a former police officer who now works for American Humane. However, this course will prove to be highly beneficial to all that attend. This training gives all professionals who have contact with canines the tools they need to safely evaluate dog behavior and diffuse dangerous situations. This class is geared specifically for police pfficers but the information can also be helpful to police officers, emergency first responders, animal control officers, aAnimal handlers/trainers, EMS and ambulance personnel, and firefighters. Topics include: American Humane’s Bark…Stop, Drop, & Roll technique for diffusing potentially dangerous situations that involve canines; Overview of Canine communication; Types and Levels of canine aggression; Awareness levels; Communicating with canines using their “language”; Officer response and behavior; Ensuring the safety of Officers, Public and Canine; and Securing a canine in a vehicle. The learning objectives:
This training offers skills to safely assess and diffuse a situation in which a canine is present and may be potentially aggressive through assessment of canine body language, identifying types of aggression and responding to the canine in their “language.
